User interface provides intuitive management and seamless performance upgrades without outages
Pros and Cons
  • "I rate Dell PowerStore a perfect 10 out of 10."
  • "My experience with technical support from Dell has been pretty good, although I have occasionally encountered situations where the person I spoke to did not fully understand my issue, but I've learned to simply hang up and call again to usually get a better response."

What is our primary use case?

Our specific use cases for Dell PowerStore at my company include all of our VMware virtualization, six clusters of five or six hosts each, Oracle clustered databases, and SAP hosts, totaling about 60 physical hosts hooked up to each unit, with performance being very good, and we are very happy.

Currently, I do not have any AI use cases for Dell PowerStore yet. We might plan to implement AI use cases for Dell PowerStore, as I've been learning about it, and would say that most likely in the next six months, we're going to do a pilot using Dell PowerStore with some other hardware as well.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Dell PowerStore for us are the top performance, which is very fast and efficient, and the user interface, which is very intuitive and easy to use for maintaining or creating LUNs or whatever else we might need to do.

The benefits I have seen from using Dell PowerStore so far include taking advantage of Dell's Anytime Upgrade. It is now renamed but remains the same thing. Last November, I upgraded both units to the 9200s with no outage, and it was really amazing, along with the full Fiber Channel support, as our previous storage used to be FCoE, an older Fiber Channel technology. Now it's Fiber Channel 32, making Dell PowerStore instrumental in that.

What needs improvement?

I am very eagerly anticipating the next generation of drives, specifically the 30 terabyte drives, but beyond that, it's really been great, and I have no complaints or pain points at all.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore since we implemented it in the summertime of 2021.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I assess the reliability and stability of Dell PowerStore to be very stable and reliable, as we have not gone down at all, and every maintenance window has gone without a hitch and been very successful.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore scales very with the growing needs of my company, offering a four-to-one or five-to-one DRR promise, and while we're not getting quite that level of deduplication, we are very happy with its efficiency in compressing data and making better use of our SSD storage.

How are customer service and support?

My experience with technical support from Dell has been pretty good, although I have occasionally encountered situations where the person I spoke to did not fully understand my issue, but I've learned to simply hang up and call again to usually get a better response.

On a scale of one to 10, I would rate Dell PowerStore support as maybe an eight or nine, as there have been a few instances that were less than stellar, but overall, I am very happy with the support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using Dell PowerStore, I had extensive storage experience with Compellents and Unity SANs, along with some others EqualLogic and PowerVault, and I found that transitioning to Dell PowerStore has been a very good upgrade, combining the best points from those solutions into one platform.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on my investment with Dell PowerStore. The cost savings come from being much happier with the faster processors that I installed with that Anytime Upgrade, and it's been trouble-free the entire time, with very high performance, as it has been designed and built properly, and we're very happy with that.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with the pricing, setup costs, and licensing for Dell PowerStore was that pricing was very competitive, as Dell went head to head with Pure, which is normally known to be a lot more expensive, and Dell won our bake-off between the two vendors because of price, value, and comparable performance to Pure.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In my evaluation process, I considered Pure and found the main differences are that Pure has an active-passive design with their controllers, while Dell PowerStore load balances amongst both controllers actively, allowing for better performance benefits. Pure's integration with their monitoring app was a little more polished than Dell's CloudIQ or AIOps, but overall, we're super happy with Dell PowerStore, especially given its more flexible lifecycle policy compared to Pure's more rigid three-year renewal requirement, which allowed me to take advantage of the Anytime Upgrade.

What other advice do I have?

My role in managing Dell PowerStore is as the storage engineer for my company, where I did the proof of concept before purchase with Dell, and I also designed, implemented, specked, and deployed it myself. We are using a pair of Dell PowerStore 9200Ts in production, which is the top-of-the-line model, and the software version is 3.6.1.2, with plans to upgrade to the 4.X code soon.

The performance metrics I use to measure success with Dell PowerStore include IOPS, latency, and raw throughput for performance aspects, as well as the soft skills, the human interaction of having to create or change things, which has been a very smooth operation all the way through, with everything coming out perfect.

My advice for someone considering Dell PowerStore is to have a bake-off or proof of concept, as Dell is very good at putting their product into your data center for a try and buy, which helped us decide that it was the right product for us, and we really liked the equipment. I rate Dell PowerStore a perfect 10 out of 10.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Storage has consolidated diverse data and delivers secure, efficient performance for workloads
Pros and Cons
  • "Dell PowerStore is used for any storage of files and blocks where performance, scalability, and manageability are needed, and it is easy to use Dell PowerStore for optimizing workloads."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerStore is used for any storage of files and blocks where performance, scalability, and manageability are needed.

    What is most valuable?

Dell PowerStore is used for any storage of files and blocks where performance, scalability, and manageability are needed. It is easy to use Dell PowerStore for optimizing workloads. Dell PowerStore is a scalable product, which is why three features are very important: scalability, manageability, and security. We have been able to consolidate different data using Dell PowerStore.

We are getting good data deduplication using Dell PowerStore's compression and deduplication technologies for our organization and our customers.

    What needs improvement?

I do not think there are any weak points of Dell PowerStore; however, I believe more AI features are needed, and Dell is already working on it.

In future updates, I do not think any configuration is required for Dell PowerStore, but it might include cross-platform uses or less power usage. There is a high demand for storage and AI workloads, so saving power as much as possible would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell PowerStore for almost two years.

    How was the initial setup?

The deployment of Dell PowerStore is simple if you have technical expertise and know the product well, making it very easy to use and deploy.

For installation of Dell PowerStore, it might take a couple of days. If you only consider installation, it is a couple of jobs, but if you consider end-to-end configuration and use, it might take a couple of days to complete the entire installation and configuration.

    What about the implementation team?

I do not participate in the deployment process for Dell PowerStore as it is done by a separate team, and we have a technical team who is responsible for those implementations.

One or two people are sufficient for deployment of Dell PowerStore; it depends on the size of the project. If it is a single or two boxes, even one person can do it, but if there are more boxes and more locations, then you need a bigger team.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

There are other products which complement the data resiliency or cybersecurity features for Dell PowerStore, such as the Dell CRS solution, which helps us create a cyber-resilient solution for the data center use.

What other advice do I have?

We are still working with Dell products in our organization.

We are working with multiple Dell PowerStore options in our projects, and some are standalone while some are on a cluster based on the project.

We are clustering multiple Dell PowerStore appliances. In some projects, we need just a couple of boxes and in other projects, we need a higher number of boxes based on the specific requirements.

I gave this review a rating of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Offers reliable expandability and straightforward user interface for seamless growth
    Pros and Cons
    • "The user interface is really simple to get behind and makes it really easy to expand and utilize the tools."
    • "On a scale of one to ten, I rate Dell PowerStore a ten out of ten."
    • "If I could improve Dell PowerStore, I would suggest that integrations into backup platforms be a little more streamlined."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerStore is used in my company for storage for virtual machines and backups, and we are growing into working on doing stuff with large language models and AI. At the moment, we do not use Dell PowerStore for AI, but we're expanding into that business case.

The business case for us when we actually do expand with Dell PowerStore involves real-time analysis of phone calls, providing solutions to our customer base when they connect in with problems related to X, Y, and Z. Here are some solutions you can try to reporting code review, and all the things.

How has it helped my organization?

The overall solution of Dell PowerStore benefits our organization by offering affordable and expandable products that meet the needs we have as we grow since we are a three-year-old company and our growth pattern has just been skyrocketing.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Dell PowerStore is its expandability and reliability. The user interface is really simple to get behind and makes it really easy to expand and utilize the tools.

Regarding Dell PowerStore, the storage gateways and the tools that Dell has to monitor the storage arrays and the servers provide real-time issues and open up support cases that are very beneficial.

The ability to just slap in another tray of disks and expand that storage as needed without a huge array rebuild is very beneficial for keeping the business running and expanding as needed.

Dell PowerStore supports growth or operational success for my business through the ease of transition for data growth as we continue to grow our product lines and storage requirements, having the onsite storage with PowerStore to grow into versus the rather salty premiums that one pays for additional storage through cloud providers such as SharePoint Online and OneDrive, which offers a more cost-effective path of growth.

    What needs improvement?

If I could improve Dell PowerStore, I would suggest that integrations into backup platforms be a little more streamlined. We are a VMShop, so just a little more intuitive connections between those systems for advanced functionality such as storage level snapshots versus just the basic VML or VMware level snapshots when doing those backups would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

At this company, I have been using Dell PowerStore for a little over a year, and in total, with all Dell products, it is closer to 12.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

When it comes to stability and reliability of Dell PowerStore, I can affirm its reliability.

How are customer service and support?

My experience with Dell's customer service and technical support has always been that they've been very helpful and gotten me to the solution I needed every time I've needed to use them.

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Dell's customer service as a solid nine. There could be times when I need an answer quicker than I can generally allow, however, that's just more of my impatience and my emergencies not being everyone else's emergencies.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Dell PowerStore, we were using the built-in storage in the VMware server, which provided zero redundancy and expandability; we needed more storage than what the server could offer, leading us to look at on-site storage in the PowerStore.

    How was the initial setup?

My experience deploying Dell PowerStore was simple. I worked with a Dell Solutions Architect to help get the deployment in place, however, I have some familiarity with the Dell products, so I found it very simple to do the rack and stack, get the configuration going, and then build out my different storage pools and everything from there.

    What about the implementation team?

I worked with a Dell Solutions Architect to help get the deployment in place.

    What was our ROI?

As for a return on investment with Dell PowerStore, I haven't calculated it to see if we've hit return on investment. It was a necessary physical need for onsite storage for running our virtual machines to avoid single points of failure in our phone system or other critical systems.

From that standpoint, we've hit our return on investment because we don't have a single point of failure for critical business systems. The success metric I use regarding Dell PowerStore is that I no longer have that single point of failure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

With regard to the pricing and licensing of Dell PowerStore, it seems affordable compared to some of the other storage platforms; outside of doing something such as data domain, the expandability and scalability of what you need make the PowerStore a very palatable price point.

You get what you need and expand as you grow. If you need to add another tray later down the line, the fact that they can support up to six trays of disks to meet your needs, and you can put in spindle disks or high-speed SSD disks to accomplish your tasks just makes it very palatable on the budget.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did consider other solutions besides Dell PowerStore; we looked at a few other solutions provided by the vendor we were working with, a Dell partner, CDW, and my familiarity with the Dell product line and the price point made it the easy choice.

What other advice do I have?

For organizations considering Dell PowerStore, my advice is to ask questions, even the ones that you don't think are relevant because what you don't know is often a decision factor that pushes your decision one way or the other.

I see Dell products, including Dell PowerStore, growing with our future needs, as we continue to grow; we're primarily a Dell shop, with the exception of a handful of Mac devices needed for marketing. Dell is our primary source of compute and storage.

On a scale of one to ten, I rate Dell PowerStore a ten out of ten.

Reliable infrastructure supports continuous production and growth with minimal downtime
    Pros and Cons
    • "I have seen some return on investment. Since we were refreshing our infrastructure, the return on investment has been that I am able to concentrate my time on high-level items rather than small-level items that come from the aging infrastructure that we had before."
    • "I assess customer service and technical support as very good."
    • "There is a big pricing increase once you get to our level, and for our size company, it was almost too large when we went from previous generation products to current models. It was a sticker shock, I have to admit."
    • "There seems to be a lack of a price range in the small company, small medium company segment."

What is our primary use case?

The use case for purchasing is that I am doing a hyper-converged infrastructure on Hyper-V. My main goal has been to really have redundancy and reliability in the system based on our production schedule. We cannot afford to have much downtime. Therefore, I needed a setup. We purchased Dell PowerStore at the same time. I needed a setup that would give me the reliability to run my operations pretty much all the time.

How has it helped my organization?

Our production runs from about 3:00 AM until about 5:00 PM, which is a very long production run. During that time, we have PLCs and data collection equipment on the production floor. If they were offline, that means the production is not running. Therefore, having that reliability with Dell PowerStore, with the PowerEdge, with the setup that I have, enables us to keep the production running.

For small medium-sized businesses, Dell PowerStore has supported growth and organizational success because our company has been growing for several years, and we expect it to keep growing over the next several years. Having that infrastructure behind the systems is going to definitely allow us to keep operating with our production schedule, which is very demanding as per our customers' needs, and then also improving our production efficiency and quantity through efficiencies. I see all the Dell products growing with our future needs. We have been a Dell customer for a long time, and as far as I can see, we will continue to be.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable thing for me is that what we do is not really resource-intensive. Most of our work is regular office tasks. We do not do a lot of high bandwidth tasks or tasks that require a lot of storage amount or compute power. What I am looking for is reliability and redundancy. That is built in at every level of the system. It is built in at the component level, and it is built in at the whole system level too.

I have seen a reduction in downtime. Unfortunately with the PowerEdge and the new setup, I cannot really answer that because it is so new. We have not had any downtime yet with it. Hopefully, we will not, however, so far we have not had any downtime.

I like having products from the same vendor. It reduces a lot of headaches. When you have multiple vendors, there can be finger-pointing. With one vendor, you can get a turnkey solution.

    What needs improvement?

The big problem that we had with Dell PowerStore comes to pricing. There seems to be a lack of a price range in the small company, small medium company segment. There is a bit of a blind spot.

Regarding additional features, it is so new that I cannot really give a comprehensive answer. I think feature-wise, it is very feature-rich. Maybe some of those features could be paired down in order to give lower price range options for companies such as us that are not IT companies, but manufacturing companies, where IT is not at the forefront of things.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore since January when we bought our first one very recently. That is our first Dell PowerStore product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable with those needs. Our growth in that sense is not very intensive as far as storage or compute goes, but it has been scalable when we have needed it.

How are customer service and support?

I assess customer service and technical support as very good. I have found them to be very knowledgeable and very responsive. I do not really have any problems there. They have been very great to deal with. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the customer service as a nine.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before purchasing Dell PowerStore, we were using a Hyper-V cluster with the Hyper-V purpose-built servers from Dell. That product line has been discontinued now, so we had to go with Dell PowerStore instead.

    What was our ROI?

I have seen some return on investment. Since we were refreshing our infrastructure, the return on investment has been that I am able to concentrate my time on high-level items rather than small-level items that come from the aging infrastructure that we had before.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a big pricing increase once you get to our level, and for our size company, it was almost too large when we went from previous generation products to current models. It was a sticker shock, I have to admit.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did not consider other solutions before purchasing Dell PowerStore.

What other advice do I have?

The advice I would give to other organizations who are considering Dell PowerStore is because of the price, make sure that you right-size the equipment so you are not paying more for capacity that you are not going to use. That is probably my best advice.

To assess that before purchasing, you basically have to look at a couple of things. First of all, what is your current use of storage? Then, of course, you have to figure out how this is going to grow over the lifetime of the next product. From there, as an IT manager, director, or CIO, you have to be tuned into the company's C-level perspective on what they think the growth is going to be over the next four or five years of the product lifecycle.

We don't currently have any AI initiatives; we may in the future. Right now, our business is manufacturing and very traditional.

On a scale of one to ten, I rate Dell PowerStore a nine overall.

Efficient consolidation and optimization of infrastructure workloads increase operational efficiency
    Pros and Cons
    • "Moving and optimizing workloads within the cluster is quite easy based on my experience with Dell PowerStore."
    • "The management capabilities of Dell PowerStore are extremely easy to use and user-friendly."
    • "The data resiliency and cybersecurity features of Dell PowerStore are just normal and would be considered medium; we need additional components such as cybersecurity vault for increased resilience."

What is our primary use case?

My customers usually use Dell PowerStore for their infrastructure workloads and for their business needs.

Customers mainly use it for infrastructure workloads.

Improving operational efficiency is one of the default use cases, and it is paramount.

How has it helped my organization?

The main positive impact of Dell PowerStore on organizations is the total cost of ownership, which is one main advantage.

    What is most valuable?

Moving and optimizing workloads within the cluster is quite easy based on my experience with Dell PowerStore.

The clustering feature, the Metro Cluster, deduplication capability, and compression are all important and valuable based on customer requirements.

Dell PowerStore's compression and deduplication technologies are very important for customers. These features increase operational efficiency and reduce their hardware footprint.

Operational efficiency is improved based on the customer industry and how their day-to-day operations and overheads are reduced. The management capabilities of Dell PowerStore are extremely easy to use and user-friendly. The benefits include ease of management and time savings.

Customers have been able to consolidate data using Dell PowerStore by 25% to 30% at least.

    What needs improvement?

The data resiliency and cybersecurity features of Dell PowerStore are just normal and would be considered medium; we need additional components such as cybersecurity vault for increased resilience.

If the data resiliency and cybersecurity features are optimized, it would be very beneficial, as it's something we look forward to.

While the workload performance of Dell PowerStore is above average compared to other storage solutions, there's always room for improvement.

Staying updated with the industry is important, though no specific improvements come to mind for Dell PowerStore's next releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell PowerStore for about three to four years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have not heard of any outages or power decreases with Dell PowerStore.

My impression of Dell PowerStore's stability is that it's quite stable.

About 10% to 15% of the time we might come across a bug and we reach out to Dell support to get it resolved.

I'd rate stability nine out of ten. This level of stability is very important for our customers. If it wasn't highly stable, they likely wouldn't buy the product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Expanding Dell PowerStore, in terms of scaling up and scaling out, is extremely easy; it's all online.

Ease of expansion is extremely important for customers. This avoids any unnecessary maintenance windows and outages. There's also better visibility.

How are customer service and support?

Dell's technical support is always available for us. Technical support helps in resolving issues in a timely manner, which is why we open cases.

I would rate the technical support of Dell PowerStore between nine and ten out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The compression and deduplication are quite good compared to other vendors. It helps customers increase operational efficiency. There will be less hardware to manage.

    How was the initial setup?

My experience with the deployment of Dell PowerStore is that it's quite easy and straightforward, typically completed within one to three days maximum.

The initial setup of Dell PowerStore is straightforward and uncomplicated.

Operations in the government sector, hospitality, and medical data storage are all examples of implementation.

Performing upgrades is quite easy, and I didn't face any challenges in this process.

    What was our ROI?

Customers manage to see ROI thanks to these features, as they reduce their hardware footprint. The reduction of capital expenditures is about 30%.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing for Dell PowerStore is all-inclusive, which is a good point, though from a price perspective, it is higher priced and could be more competitive.

The pricing is based on opportunities, so it varies widely.

What other advice do I have?

We're a consultant. We work with small to medium-sized businesses.

Focusing on data resiliency and cybersecurity features is crucial.

Customers are satisfied but would like to see it improved in the future.

I would rate Dell PowerStore at nine out of ten. It's a very good product.

Consistent data reduction has improved protection, yet support policies still raise concerns
    Pros and Cons
    • "There is extensive integration with security products and backup products, which is what all my clients look for in general-purpose storage."
    • "However, Dell PowerStore is not the right solution for every situation."

What is our primary use case?

I am a reseller and a managed services provider. We have Dell equipment in-house for our IT, and we also manage Dell equipment at our client's sites. We sell a considerable amount of Dell products as well.

    What is most valuable?

I really appreciate the consistency of the data reduction. Dell promises five to one, but with the recent software update, the technology has improved to achieve six to one. There is extensive integration with security products and backup products, which is what all my clients look for in general-purpose storage.

There is a new inline scan for data in flight, and I can see that this is beneficial to many of my customers. It is not a matter of if a ransomware attack will occur, because it will; it is a matter of time.

I do see many comparisons between Dell and different vendors. Dell wins on pricing most of the time with equivalent or similar products. This represents a significant value add to my clients. Many things are comparable to the competition, but the price advantage stands out almost every time, and clients are satisfied with what they are using. Many of them have Data Domain, which was the first deduplication appliance, and every other vendor started copying Data Domain. Dell PowerStore and Data Domain certainly provide a lot of value.

    What needs improvement?

The AI insight feature is fairly new, and I believe that as it collects more data from a larger install base and has more information available for all customers, I could see real value added to those features.

Some customers are very happy with Dell support. However, the VxRail situation does not look favorable for many people because they want to move away from VMware, but if they repurpose the product, Dell will not support it. They are uncertain about what they will do next. There is a buyback option available, but I think they would prefer to reuse the equipment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since I moved to a reseller position about two and a half years ago.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have many clients who previously used the ME series from Dell, some HPE products, and Hitachi was very popular with my clients, though this was due to historical reasons.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I always evaluate alternatives since I am a reseller and sell multiple vendors' products. I assess what is right for my clients, and many times we select Dell storage, but the decision depends entirely on the requirements.

If clients need really high-performance block storage and are satisfied with previous solutions, such as an HPE shop that was happy with Nimble, I might suggest HPE Alletra storage because it offers the same features for migration and replication. However, if they have Hitachi but want unified storage to implement file sharing or other capabilities, I evaluate options such as Dell PowerStore, NetApp, or other products.

What other advice do I have?

When a ransomware attack occurs is not a question of if but when. Many of my clients are not familiar with all available features. Many clients have moved from storage without data reduction capabilities that they purchased ten years ago, and now they are experiencing significant data reduction benefits. However, Dell PowerStore is not the right solution for every situation. My overall review rating for this product is seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

I am currently using standalone all-flash Dell PowerStore deployments.

Storage has run reliably in the background and now supports current and future workloads
    Pros and Cons
    • "In my view, if a storage array requires constant monitoring or 'whispers in your ear' every five minutes with issues, it isn't doing its job. Because the sites currently running PowerStore are silent and stable, I consider the Return on Investment to be excellent. It provides exactly the peace of mind we are looking for."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is high-performance Block Storage. Currently, our Dell PowerStore arrays operate as standalone units supporting our traditional infrastructure, specifically for VMware datastores.

Looking ahead, we plan to integrate these arrays into more advanced DAP environments. While our current footprint is focused on virtual machines, our roadmap includes leveraging the PowerStore’s block storage capabilities for containerized workloads, ensuring a seamless transition from legacy to modern data architectures.

How has it helped my organization?

The primary improvement to our organization lies in the solution’s reliability and invisibility. For us, the greatest measure of success is a component that performs its job so consistently that we simply don't hear about it. Aside from proactive disk replacements, the PowerStore requires minimal attention; we scale capacity and present datastores as needed, and it just works.

      What needs improvement?

Regarding future improvements or upcoming versions, I cannot provide a definitive answer today. As we do not yet have a full A-to-Z view of the product roadmap or the specific implementation constraints, we are awaiting the next vendor presentation to evaluate how future features will fit our requirements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working in architecture and storage for seven to eight years, with a year and a half at my client, I've known these products for a number of years, now actually using them for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Where I am, we face the challenge of having arrays that are already in place; I didn't choose to put in Dell PowerStore specifically at the start, but in the solutions that are going to be presented to us, Dell PowerStore arrays are apparently included. We're waiting to see the feedback, knowing that, although I was doubtful at the beginning when Dell PowerStore came out because there were many problems, things have stabilized over time, so there's no reason for concern, and in the plants where we have them or where they're active, we have zero problems with them.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, we haven't yet reached the critical size to scale up.

      How was the initial setup?

Regarding deployment and my experience with the installation, we didn't do it; all I know is that at our place, we are very late on quite a few points, and in terms of deployment, that's a topic if we install some—part of the topics related to DRP and automated deployment, we want to bring that forward, and I understood that Dell PowerStore arrays allow automated deployment.

      What was our ROI?

In my view, if a storage array requires constant monitoring or 'whispers in your ear' every five minutes with issues, it isn't doing its job. Because the sites currently running PowerStore are silent and stable, I consider the Return on Investment to be excellent. It provides exactly the peace of mind we are looking for.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Today, I don't yet have a use case where I've put a price on it, and it's true that for us, it's somewhat special; we have negotiated rates because we are a large group, so right now, I can't answer.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We consistently evaluate various solutions within the Dell portfolio. Our selection depends on the specific use case, our infrastructure history, and future requirements. We maintain an active watch on technology and remain open to evolving our stack as needed.

What other advice do I have?

We have an extensive array of systems for storage. The size of my company is very big, with more than tens thousands employees.

In my opinion, this hardware does not play a role in the AI initiative in our organization. We have a project in progress and the hardware is not defined, but perhaps in the future it will be.

I give this product a rating of ten out of ten.

Eases management and saves hours weekly with simple upgrades and excellent support
      Pros and Cons
      • "The thing that I appreciate the most about Dell PowerStore is how easy it is to upgrade; the upgrade process is very simple, and I really appreciate how easy it is to connect my hosts to Dell PowerStore, as the environment automatically detects new fiber channel HBA ports for all the hosts that we connect to."
      • "I have experienced some downtime with Dell PowerStore, particularly due to a bug with Emulex HBAs during an upgrade process."

What is our primary use case?

In my role, I am both the storage engineer and administrator and architect managing Dell PowerStore. Currently, we have two 3200T models and one 3000T model, which is a Gen 1, all running Dell PowerStore version 4.0 OS.

We use Dell PowerStore almost exclusively for high-performance workloads, mostly Oracle, Microsoft SQL, and MySQL databases.

      What is most valuable?

The thing that I appreciate the most about Dell PowerStore is how easy it is to upgrade; the upgrade process is very simple, and I really appreciate how easy it is to connect my hosts to Dell PowerStore, as the environment automatically detects new fiber channel HBA ports for all the hosts that we connect to.

Dell PowerStore has simplified my workload pretty dramatically as an organization. It is very easy to manage Dell PowerStore; we have other Dell products, such as Dell Compellent and Dell PowerVault, and the PowerStore is much simpler to use. I have experienced dramatic time savings with Dell PowerStore. I estimate that I'm probably saving six to 10 hours a week in management with Dell PowerStore.

      What needs improvement?

I would really appreciate the ability to implement file on Dell PowerStore after I've already provisioned the environment, as right now I have to choose between unified file and block or exclusively block when I first deploy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have experienced some downtime with Dell PowerStore, particularly due to a bug with Emulex HBAs during an upgrade process.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore has been able to grow with and scale with the growing needs of our organization. We started out with just the 3000T, and then we bought one 3200T, and expanded to another 3200T for our production environment, slowly expanding as we need.

How are customer service and support?

I evaluate Dell support as incredibly good, as I've dealt with a lot of support companies and found their service much better than others. Dell differs positively from HPE, as HPE support tends to be extremely proactive, but not as technically skilled, making my interactions with Dell support much easier.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Positive

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing for Dell PowerStore was that the Dell team was very open, and their expertise makes me want to only buy Dell products, even though the university requires multiple vendors.

What other advice do I have?

I do not have any AI use cases on Dell PowerStore. I'm not sure if we're planning to use Dell PowerStore for AI workloads, but we are planning to use AI in the near future. As a university, we are still trying to figure out how to implement AI in our environment. T

he feature set of Dell PowerStore is extremely robust in comparison to other storage arrays that I manage, and I would appreciate feedback that makes the Dell ME storage arrays as good as the old Dell Compellents.

      On a scale of 1-10, I rate Dell PowerStore a 9.

enables modern IT consolidation and accelerates customer workflows with flexibility
      Pros and Cons
      • "We started working with the first generation Dell PowerStore in 2020, and our customers are already migrating to the second generation."
      • "Upgrading an old model to a new one can be complex, particularly when using VMware."

What is our primary use case?

My use cases for Dell PowerStore typically involve consolidating older storage and bringing the future of storage to our customers. Because we are a Dell partner, I sell a lot of Dell PowerStore storage, especially to modernize their infrastructure and consolidate workloads on a modern infrastructure based on Kubernetes. Dell PowerStore fits perfectly in the modern IT landscape, especially with AI.

We talk about AI, and Dell PowerStore fits perfectly for our customers, enabling a variety of user workflows and customer workflows. For manufacturing, Dell PowerStore is perfect because it empowers and speeds up their jobs, providing future-ready storage.

One of our customers uses Dell PowerStore for AI, which is currently still in study, aiming to develop an autonomous agent to capture payment. This system will implement a responsive AI agent based for each store, which needs to react quickly, and Dell PowerStore provides the low latency needed for such use cases, supporting not just one shop station but potentially thousands, handling large amounts of data and logs.

      What is most valuable?

Customers see benefits from implementing Dell PowerStore, as it significantly speeds up their workloads. When we change the repository for our data and speed up the workload, including applications and databases, our virtual environment or private cloud speeds up. Everything about the work done in the company speeds up, from the warehouse to the offices, and every part of the company improves.

For me and my customers, the most valuable features of Dell PowerStore are the data reduction and scalability. The data reduction of 5:1 with the latest version of the software is very good because it saves a lot of money and space, allowing us to use the budget for other things.

Another valuable feature of Dell PowerStore is its scalability, as you can add one drive at a time to grow without having to purchase multiple drives.

Connectivity is another notable feature; you can use many PCIe cards to connect to the back end. With AI and the push for faster workflows, we need to integrate 100 Gigabit cards and faster switches. Additionally, because it operates within a broader ecosystem, Dell PowerStore is very compatible with various systems, including SAP and Oracle, enhancing speed and latency for numerous use cases. I believe Dell PowerStore fits 90% of companies and meets their storage needs.

      What needs improvement?

In terms of improvement for Dell PowerStore, I think data mobility is crucial. A compelling feature would be seamless mobility of data without disruption, from local storage to the cloud. It would be much easier if Dell PowerStore implemented this form of data mobility. Currently, migrating from one model to another is not very straightforward, although it's on the roadmap. Upgrading an old model to a new one can be complex, particularly when using VMware.

I do not give it a ten because other storage solutions may offer better features. For instance, Dell acquired a company called Compellent, which had a feature called live migration, allowing multiple storage-to-storage transfers, including three hops. With Dell PowerStore, you can only replicate data between two storages systems, needing a separate appliance for more complex replication, which competitors like NetApp or Pure Storage provide as built-in features. I suggest this capability be considered for future development, alongside enhancements to data security and analysis.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for about five years.

      What about the implementation team?

My role in using or implementing Dell PowerStore is to design the infrastructure and analyze where it fits, considering the needs of the customer. We sell a solution that perfectly fits what the customer needs, as Dell has a lot of tools to implement the right solution. Before we sell a product, we conduct thorough analysis and discuss it with our customers, which makes them happy because we provide documentation containing all necessary parameters. We explain why they need to invest in such enterprise storage, and typically our work involves analysis, selling the storage, and empowering the customer's company.

      What was our ROI?

Considering ROI for customers using Dell PowerStore, the cost is important, especially with the more affordable prices of the PowerStore 500 model. The lifecycle of the product is significant, and sometimes the renewal of maintenance costs more than a new product. Thus, the product lifecycle should ideally cost less.

What other advice do I have?

We started working with the first generation Dell PowerStore in 2020, and our customers are already migrating to the second generation. Dell PowerStore is currently at version 4.0, and new features are released every six months. It is Kubernetes-based storage, so it's not disruptive to upgrade the firmware; every time we update the firmware, we have new features, and our customers are very happy.

It's a long partnership since Dell initially focused solely on servers. Now, they are a powerhouse offering everything from servers to storage and clients, presenting significant opportunities for business discussions.

I rate Dell PowerStore a nine out of ten.

Supports dual use cases for block and file storage but requires improvement in configuration complexity and reliance on support
      Pros and Cons
      • "Dell PowerStore as a product has a sufficient quantity of functionalities and is more functional than other storages in the mid or top tier."
      • "I am not satisfied with Dell PowerStore because of stability. Stability and complexity of some features and configurations are issues with Dell PowerStore."

What is our primary use case?

I am currently using the model 1000 for Dell PowerStore. We are using Dell PowerStore for two needs: for block storage and as a file server.

      What is most valuable?

Based on my experience, I would recommend Dell PowerStore to others in some cases. I cannot explain the size of the company that would benefit from Dell PowerStore because a company could be small but have large data or need multiple functionalities in the same device. The decision depends on requirements rather than company size.

      What needs improvement?

I am not satisfied with Dell PowerStore because of stability. Stability and complexity of some features and configurations are issues with Dell PowerStore. There is also a huge dependency on Dell EMC engineers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I am still using Dell PowerStore.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I am not satisfied with Dell PowerStore. Stability and complexity of some features and configurations are issues with Dell PowerStore. I would rate the product's stability at about six out of ten, not more.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support by Dell is much better, but generally, there is a lot of dependency on Dell technical support. For example, if we need to upgrade the firmware of a device, we need to contact support engineers. We need to grant internet access for storage, which in some cases is not acceptable.

I would rate the quality of technical support at about eight out of ten. The only drawback is that we have problems related to logistics, and logistics sometimes take much longer than needed.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Positive

      How was the initial setup?

The first part of the implementation is very simple if I have enough experience, especially if I have enough experience working with Dell EMC products.

      What about the implementation team?

I took part in the implementation of Dell PowerStore in my environment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At this moment, I see no advantages or strong points in Dell PowerStore because in comparison with price and functionality that we used in our on-premises infrastructure, it has an unattractive price.

Dell PowerStore is expensive in comparison with other products. When comparing with Hitachi products, I know that prices are dependent on regions and different marketing strategies, but at this moment in our region, in comparison with price and stability as well as price and performance, Hitachi is better.

What other advice do I have?

I have used Dell PowerStore 2 and other storages from Dell EMC. For example, PowerVault, Unity, SC series, and different storages from not only Dell EMC.

I am using both Dell Unity XT and Dell PowerStore. The performance metrics I use to measure the success of Dell PowerStore include the average response time for the same environment and the same load. For performance, it is sufficient.

Overall, Dell PowerStore as a product rates about seven or eight out of ten because it has a sufficient quantity of functionalities. It has additional functionalities and is more functional than other storages in the mid or top tier.

We are not using Dell PowerStore storage functionality for data consolidation. Nowadays, the application is responsible for data consolidation, not storage.

I would not recommend Dell PowerStore to companies which are using unified storage solutions or needing unified storage solutions. I would rate this review overall as seven out of ten.
