Reliable high‑availability storage has supported advanced vmware integration and ai data workloads
Pros and Cons
  • "What I feel is that for this product, whether for mid-range customers or high-enterprise customers, it has very good capability in terms of high availability, resiliency, scalability, and user-friendly configuration, which makes it a very good product for customers."
  • "Regarding enhancements for Dell PowerStore, I believe a couple of things can be improved, such as the GUI and CLI connectivity."

What is our primary use case?

I am part of the R&D team working with Dell PowerStore. I use Dell PowerStore internally in my company and utilize it for VMware integration.

How has it helped my organization?

Dell PowerStore's built-in integration has benefited my organization as I am working on integrating it with the XC98, 9875L liquid cooling server platform. Testing the IOPS on the system is crucial, as understanding how it performs in conjunction with Dell PowerStore provides vital data on bandwidth, latency, read/write operations, and connectivity configurations, which helps us achieve better performance results compared to previous platforms.

What is most valuable?

There are a couple of features of Dell PowerStore that are quite good in comparison to other storage boxes I used previously. One is the convenience of creating a new host group or initiator, which is quite easy and user-friendly compared to other platforms. It is also very convenient for configuration options such as iSCSI or FC.

The built-in integrations of Dell PowerStore are quite useful and important, especially considering our current development focus on AI data centers, where we need high-end storage solutions along with high-end servers to meet industry needs.

What needs improvement?

Regarding enhancements for Dell PowerStore, I believe a couple of things can be improved, such as the GUI and CLI connectivity. Another point is the identification of ports; it can be confusing to distinguish between the FC ports, Ethernet ports, and which ports support NVMe, indicating there is scope for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for nearly two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I did not experience any downtime, crashes, or performance issues in these two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore is scalable. Scaling with Dell PowerStore is quite easy in a SAN environment, and it supports storage clustering, which simplifies the process.

How are customer service and support?

I have not communicated with Dell PowerStore technical support since I work on the QA and R&D side and have not needed to engage with the support team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Dell PowerStore, I used several HP solutions, including HP MSA, XP, 3PAR, Primera, and Alletra, which also consolidated data around 90 to 95 percent depending on the specific HP solution.

I decided to switch from the previous technologies because I was only working in the storage domain before, whereas now I am involved in both storage and server end technologies, thus allowing me to explore and upgrade my skills with a new opportunity.

How was the initial setup?

Dell PowerStore is configured as standalone as of now, and I will confirm the model I am using shortly.

What about the implementation team?

Dell incorporates proprietary security features such as SKM and ILKM, which ensures the disks are reliable and support various form factors.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I considered another option but found Dell to be the better choice for my needs when I joined two years ago.

What other advice do I have?

The system comes in different capacities, allowing for data consolidation based on the disk connections. Dell PowerStore supports a maximum of 256TB volume size, with an overall capacity potentially reaching around 16 to 18 petabytes. For example, if I have a 1TB disk, it can maintain data up to 93 percent capacity. There is a customizable alert feature that triggers when the volume reaches 75 percent capacity, prompting a need to manage volume configurations to prevent corruption or slow performance.

I have not tested or am not much aware of the cybersecurity features of Dell PowerStore, but the resiliency and high availability are quite good; if I wanted to rate them out of 10, I would rate them somewhere between 9 to 9.5.

I work as a QA engineer or validation engineer from a technical perspective. What I feel is that for this product, whether for mid-range customers or high-enterprise customers, it has very good capability in terms of high availability, resiliency, scalability, and user-friendly configuration, which makes it a very good product for customers. I would rate this product an 8 out of 10.

Storage has delivered efficient space savings and supports high-performance SAP workloads
Pros and Cons
  • "Dell PowerStore has helped my organization improve operational efficiency by providing proper performance for whatever application a customer uses, making it easy for our production environment."

What is our primary use case?

I use Dell PowerStore for SAP and some databases along with a file server.

    What is most valuable?

The best features of Dell PowerStore that I appreciate the most are its efficiency, as I can provide sufficient space due to data reduction and compression, and the performance, which is adequate according to our applications.

These two aspects are very beneficial for me where we are getting good performance and space as well.

Dell PowerStore has helped my organization improve operational efficiency by providing proper performance for whatever application a customer uses, making it easy for our production environment.

I can say that nowadays, Dell PowerStore is giving very good performance and fulfilling the requirements of the customer.

After Unity, I think it is a very good product.

    What needs improvement?

As of now, I do not have anything specific that comes to mind regarding room for improvement, but I can say some AI improvements would be welcome.

Otherwise, I think it is good because we continue to get updates and improvements in storage features and efficiency.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for the last two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of Dell PowerStore a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore is very easy to expand, and I would rate it a ten out of ten.

There is some maintenance required for Dell PowerStore, and my sales and procurement teams are working with Dell for the new storage.

Currently, we have some requirements in place, and they are working on that.

Due to SSDs, the workload performance by Dell PowerStore is boosting, so it is good.

How are customer service and support?

My experience with technical support has been very good, and I would give it a ten out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

The deployment of Dell PowerStore is easy because I am already working with it, so it is easy for me.

The deployment duration varies depending on the requirements, but if I talk about the configuration of storage for Dell PowerStore, then it takes hardly two days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of Dell PowerStore is cost-efficient.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Comparing Dell PowerStore with other IT solutions and vendors on the market, it is a really good product.

If I compare it with NetApp storage, HP, or any other vendor, I am getting a very good result from Dell PowerStore, so it is good for me, and I prefer this.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the 500T model of Dell PowerStore, and currently, I have around five or six PowerStore appliances.

I am using multiple Dell PowerStore appliances.

It is very easy for me to move and optimize workloads within clusters, but I am not taking care of all the parts because some of the parts are managed by another team, such as configuration and integration with VMware.

I cannot provide more information on that part.

I think more than five thousand users use the solution because I am utilizing it in five or six sites.

Currently, I do not have the option to consolidate any data.

Dell PowerStore's compression and deduplication technologies are very important because earlier we were not using these technologies, but nowadays they are very efficient.

For example, if I purchase ten terabytes or one hundred terabytes, I can allocate around three hundred, four hundred terabytes, or five hundred terabytes.

This is very good, and I appreciate these features, which is why this technology is moving in a different way.

I find Dell PowerStore easy to use.

Due to security reasons, we are not using Dell PowerStore APEX AI because our storage environment is totally disconnected from internet connectivity.

Currently, we are not using it, even though we have approached the end customer, but they have not allowed it.

I suggest enrollment in the lifecycle extension, but for lifecycle, either replacement or upgrade, there is another team handling that.

I utilize the built-in integration with VMware.

Built-in integrations are important for my organization because all of my applications and production are running there.

I would recommend this product because I prefer it, so it is definitely preferable for me.

I would rate this review a ten out of ten.

Has reduced storage usage through efficient data reduction and supports straightforward expansion
    Pros and Cons
    • "My experience with deploying Dell PowerStore was that the installation was straightforward."
    • "I appreciate the ease of use and storage presentation features of Dell PowerStore the most, as it is easy to present up storage and the data reduction has already led to an estimated four to one reduction in usage, resulting in noticeable cost savings."
    • "Dell PowerStore could improve in the updating process and lifecycle management, as the upgrades seem to take a long time, along with some of the management features."

What is our primary use case?

The main use cases for Dell PowerStore in my company are for file and block storage.

    What is most valuable?

I appreciate the ease of use and storage presentation features of Dell PowerStore the most. By storage presentation, I mean how easy it is to present up storage and the data reduction.

These features are valuable to me due to the savings and cost benefits. In terms of reducing our storage usage, I have realized some cost savings already. I estimate that we have reduced it by four to one.

    What needs improvement?

Dell PowerStore could improve in the updating process and lifecycle management, as the upgrades seem to take a long time, along with some of the management features. Additionally, better integration with cloud platforms for offloading storage to hyperscalers could be beneficial. For example, being able to copy backup sets into the cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore in my company for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would assess the stability and reliability of Dell PowerStore as good; we did have a few outages concerning the controllers. Overall they were pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore scales effectively, which was another reason for our satisfaction, as we were able to expand or add additional shelves, and the process was straightforward.

How are customer service and support?

I would evaluate support on a scale of one to ten as an eight.

To make support a ten, I would want improvements in terms of speed, response time, and the expertise of who you're dealing with, as generally on an installation, you won't get your level three; you'll get your level one or level two.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Dell PowerStore, we used HPE 3PARs. We decided to switch since they were end-of-life.

    How was the initial setup?

My experience with deploying Dell PowerStore was that the installation was straightforward, and the documentation that was available, along with the support, left me with no complaints.

    What was our ROI?

Post-storage migration made a noticeable improvement in our business operations, particularly in what we were able to reduce from the capacity usage, which was the main driver.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before selecting Dell PowerStore, I considered HP and Pure as other solutions.

During my evaluation process, both positive and negative aspects stood out to me, particularly from a pricing perspective, as it hit the pivot point for our budget, and we were offered a guarantee in terms of storage savings where if those metrics weren't met, we would get additional storage at no extra cost.

What other advice do I have?

Currently, Dell PowerStore does not play a role in my company's AI initiatives. The solution doesn't offer the full 100% online capabilities, however, I'm assuming that's coming down the line.

On a scale of one to ten, I rate Dell PowerStore an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It is fast, and it has a much higher datareduction due to its compared to Unity addional hardware component (IBM holds this one back in 2017/2018) so finally it enters the DELL Midrange Storage and has this 'PMAX' feature to it.

What I like much less it that when you update e.g. diskfirmware, your system is critical and won't withstand another failure. It also takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes per disk to update partially also because diskreconstructions take place during the diskupgrade process . I suppose the algorithm won't proceed once a disk would fail. There are also lots of cases where an update might be disruptive. As to maintaining it, it seems much more vulnerable then the Dell EMC Unity series.

As to its functions, its is more intuitive and has Metro Cluster features.

We use it only as Block Storage, not even full NVMe as our VMware infra still uses features that are unsupported on NVMe eventhough one might segment the ports for SCSI and for FC-NVMe usage which we didn't in the end. Overall it scores better on certain aspects compared to DELL EMC Unity 880f it scores less at the same time. I'd give them both 8/10 but for different reasons

Integrated storage and virtualization have improved performance and supported global growth
    Pros and Cons
    • "Dell products have positively impacted my organization in terms of performance and operational efficiency; we do not have major issues with Dell."
    • "My only concern is with the procurement process, which takes longer when we procure Dell products."

What is our primary use case?

In our dealings, we utilize Dell PowerStore, VxRail, and Data Domains. Dell PowerStore serves as our primary storage solution, and we have VxRail for virtualization. We utilize both VMware and Nutanix for Dell PowerStore's built-in integrations, and we have multiple use cases. These Dell PowerStore built-in integrations are very important for us, as they meet our business requirements, which is why we are moving ahead with all the procurements with Dell.

    What is most valuable?

Dell products have positively impacted my organization in terms of performance and operational efficiency; we do not have major issues with Dell. Dell PowerStore's data resiliency, availability, and cybersecurity features are strong. These features meet my business's needs today.

    What needs improvement?

My only concern is with the procurement process, which takes longer when we procure Dell products. We always have to work with a partner from Dell, and while Dell connects with us and we have account leadership, the procurement process involves delays due to third parties like Insight or AHEAD, causing us to miss opportunities and experience project delays.

More than the response time, it is the resolution time that needs improvement. The response time is acceptable, but the overall resolution can be improved. We received faulty disks after procurement, which required raising a change for hardware replacements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell PowerStore for almost ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

From a technical standpoint, we have not faced any major challenges besides the procurement process.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore is scalable for our organization. We have approximately 100,000 people using it in our company, which demonstrates the scale at which we are utilizing Dell PowerStore. We need around thirty to forty administrators to manage it. We are still procuring and scaling it up in multiple regions in the future.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate their technical support an eight.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Over the last ten years, we have been using Dell products and replacing HP, focusing highly on scaling up on the Dell side only.

    What was our ROI?

We have a TLA with Dell for more than a million, which allows us to receive fairly good prices on the products. We do evaluate the return on investment. The benefits our organization has realized from the program are focused on technical debt reduction and the ROI we pursue.

What other advice do I have?

We are still using Dell heavily, spending millions, almost a million or more on Dell products. From a pricing perspective, we are satisfied. I cannot think of any additional features for Dell PowerStore that I would like to see at the moment. We are enrolled in a lifecycle program, reducing our technical debt and refreshing hardware with Dell in multiple locations globally. We are using the program to upgrade to next-generation products. I would rate this review a nine overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Pricing and ecosystem gaps have limited long‑term value despite efficient performance gains
    Pros and Cons
      • "Dell PowerStore is a very good product, and we would love to sell more of these products. Pricing is the only thing that could still be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are working with Dell. I have been a reseller and system integrator for Dell, and we are a platinum partner for them. I have been dealing with Dell PowerStore and PowerScale for more than a decade. Dell started an India general program, and from there we became associated with them. Earlier, we were a partner for EMC Isilon, and when Dell acquired that business, we maintained a good relationship with them. That is how our story began with Dell.

      What is most valuable?

The features I find most valuable in Dell PowerStore include its durable, rugged platform, customer acceptance, reliability, and services.

We do have customers clustering multiple Dell PowerStore appliances. It depends on their applications and requirements whether it is easy for Dell PowerStore to use for moving and optimizing workloads within the cluster. Sometimes the scope of work is turnkey, and sometimes it is easier. We have experts on this, and sometimes we take help from Dell on the implementation and deployment. That is how we run our business.

Operational efficiency in terms of their applications has improved as customers found it faster. As new generations come and per application demand, we give solutions according to the applications. That is how their applications achieve good performance, and that is how we maintain their operations.

Cybersecurity is in itself a different topic. There are a couple of solutions on DLP and DDA that Dell promotes.

      What needs improvement?

I see room for improvement when it comes to integrations with other ecosystems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for more than a decade.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to expand Dell PowerStore, which is why it is called scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Cybersecurity is in itself a different topic. There are a couple of solutions on DLP and DDA that Dell promotes.

      What about the implementation team?

As I mentioned, we are a platinum partner with qualified engineers for turnkey projects, and we deliver those. That is how we have built trust with Dell. Sometimes we take help from Dell on the implementation and deployment.

What other advice do I have?

Earlier it was competitive, but now since the pricing of semiconductors and other materials have gone up, Dell's delivery is comparatively better than others in today's market.

Some of our customers buy from the AWS marketplace, but they prefer our services from New Era as well, so they do the billing through us. Otherwise, they go directly to Dell. We do turnkey projects, and most are corporate clients who need our services. Dell PowerScale is not suitable for everyone and requires specialized value-added services that we provide to our customers.

Competition will always be present. It is about pitching the right solution to the right customer with the appropriate applications and services. Delivery time, service time, and SLA times all matter to the customer, especially enterprise customers.

Dell PowerStore's compression and deduplication technologies are good for my customers. Storage and backup are essential requirements, and we provide those solutions as well.

As a market player, if Dell becomes more competitive considering material shortages and competition, customer purchasing power will increase.

The assessment of workload performance offered by Dell PowerStore depends upon the application and workload of the customer.

Dell PowerStore is a good product with better features. All the features are there, which is why its market share is better than any other OEM.

It depends on the customer whether they use APEX AIOps, also known as CloudIQ, in Dell PowerStore. E-commerce companies use that. We have limited customers regarding the insights offered by CloudIQ.

Our customers are enrolled in Lifecycle Extension, formerly branded as Anytime Upgrade. Lifecycle extension benefits them. For example, if you are giving a five-year warranty, the lifecycle is eight years, not more than that. We give them extended warranty.

Dell PowerStore is a very good product, and we would love to sell more of these products. Pricing is the only thing that could still be improved. In this competitive world, pricing is going up, and ultimately customer buying power is going down. This will definitely be a setback for at least one or two years. We have to be competitive. Customers are always asking us for prices. Earlier it was better, but now since material shortage exists, prices are also not in anyone's control. We are saying the same thing to customers. In this way, we are losing customers, and they are postponing or deferring their purchases for some time. Deals are not going at this time due to geographical and other outside pressures.

We use built-in integrations for VMware, Kubernetes, containers, and other ecosystems. This review has a customer service rating of three out of ten.

Modern storage has delivered fast virtualization performance and supports seamless cloud replication
      Pros and Cons
      • "It is easy to use and easy to understand when it comes to the management capabilities of Dell PowerStore."
      • "I believe if Dell PowerStore can have a hybrid mode with burst to cloud capabilities, that would be beneficial."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerStore is used in enterprise environments based on my experience. The hybrid features can have integration with the public cloud like AWS or Azure so they can have seamless replication from on-premises to cloud. In my experience, Dell PowerStore is only used in the virtualized environment, which is VMware.

      What is most valuable?

The compression, the deduplication, and the full flash for Dell PowerStore are key features. The performance is one of the key features for Dell PowerStore. Consolidating data using Dell PowerStore is used for the virtual environment. Sometimes we use Live Optics from Dell to assess the workload performance offered by Dell PowerStore. It is easy to use and easy to understand when it comes to the management capabilities of Dell PowerStore.

      What needs improvement?

I believe if Dell PowerStore can have a hybrid mode with burst to cloud capabilities, that would be beneficial. If it can have something an immutable function, that would be great as well. It would be beneficial if Dell PowerStore can integrate with Kubernetes in terms of containerized environment. There is some room for improvement when it comes to built-in integrations with Kubernetes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell PowerStore for a few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I do not have any issues or weaknesses regarding Dell PowerStore.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I do not have much experience with that, but I believe scaling out and scaling up with Dell PowerStore should be quite straightforward and easy. Regarding the importance of the ability to add capacity in single-drive increments versus drive packs, adding a single drive to Dell PowerStore should work as well.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate the technical support for Dell PowerStore as nine.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Depending on the requirement and the kind of application they are going to host, for smaller ones with no heavy workloads like a database, we normally go with PowerVault if it is just for normal usage.

      How was the initial setup?

My experience with the deployment of Dell PowerStore is quite straightforward and easy for deployment. The deployment took one day in my case.

      What about the implementation team?

Regardless of the physical installation, Dell PowerStore requires two people for the physical installation, and for the configuration, basically one person is enough.

      What was our ROI?

I do not have the numbers regarding whether Dell PowerStore has helped reduce my customer's capital expenditures.

What other advice do I have?

Dell PowerStore is quite good. If asked, I would rate it around eight to nine. I am not clustering multiple Dell PowerStore appliances; it is only one unit standalone with dual controller. Overall, I would rate Dell PowerStore as eight to nine on a scale of one to ten. My overall review rating for this solution is nine.

High performance storage has supported fast workloads and improves data center efficiency
      Pros and Cons
      • "What I appreciate most about Dell PowerStore is its performance and speed."
      • "The pricing for Dell PowerStore is quite expensive."

What is our primary use case?

Dell PowerStore is a storage product for data centers or server rooms that prepares storage for servers.

I am using just one Dell PowerStore appliance, and it is not clustered.

      What is most valuable?

What I appreciate most about Dell PowerStore is its performance and speed.

The workload performance in Dell PowerStore is very good.

      What needs improvement?

The pricing for Dell PowerStore is quite expensive. I want to have a cluster, but right now we could only have one node. If the pricing were better, I would like to have at least two nodes as a cluster.

I do not use deduplication in Dell PowerStore because I want better performance. While deduplication could help use less space, I have had performance issues with compression and deduplication in the past, so I keep it disabled.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working in my current field overall for about twelve years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have not seen any lagging, crashing, downtime, or instability with Dell PowerStore.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Overall, the scalability of Dell PowerStore is great, and we are satisfied with that.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted technical support and customer support and tried to open a case.

My experience with them includes a lot of waiting, and when someone came to help, it seemed they were not very familiar with the issue. We had to wait and escalate, so it was not very professional in that case. However, another case was good, but in that instance, we had to wait as well.

I rate the speed and quality of their answers at about six out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used an alternative to Dell PowerStore, which is HP Alletra.

I prefer Dell PowerStore more because, while HP Alletra's interface is user-friendly and easy for administration, Dell PowerStore has greater performance and features despite its less user-friendly interface.

      How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment of Dell PowerStore is moderate. It is not easy for me; it is about between difficult and easy, something moderate.

It takes about one day to fully deploy Dell PowerStore with the features and everything.

      What about the implementation team?

For the type of deployment of Dell PowerStore, it requires at least two people: one who knows about storage and another who is a network expert.

What other advice do I have?

Scaling up and down Dell PowerStore seems quite hard, and I would rate it at about an eight on a scale of zero to ten.

I think CloudIQ, known as APEX AIOps, is for monitoring, and while we do not use it now, I would like to because it shows performance and everything on the system.

I have not tried using the LifeCycle Extension service from Dell.

As for maintenance on Dell PowerStore, we have not done any yet. Until now, we did not do any maintenance, but perhaps for an upgrade, this would be necessary.

My advice for new users of Dell PowerStore is to be mindful of the network deployment. While it comes with the storage, configuring the necessary network switches can be challenging, and I would prefer it to be more integrated and pre-configured.

I use Dell PowerStore on Linux. Deploying Dell PowerStore on Linux, I would rate it at about a seven on a scale of one to ten. We use Dell PowerStore storage for VMware but not right now for Kubernetes. We would like to use it in the near future on pod nodes for Kubernetes.

I do not use the feature to add capacity in single drive increments versus drive packs, and I do not know much about it, so I cannot provide a correct answer for this question.

My overall review rating for Dell PowerStore is eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

      On-premises

Virtual desktops have run smoothly and disaster recovery has become more reliable
      Pros and Cons
      • "Dell PowerStore is a mid-range product that can suit small companies and provides good IOPS and performance."
      • "Earlier the quality of support was excellent, but now it has deteriorated. We do not get quick support, and we have to wait longer to get the support."

What is our primary use case?

My current use cases for Dell PowerStore mostly involve VDI and Virtual Desktop Interface connections.

We are almost at the point of using approximately 20 Dell PowerStore appliances as separate systems, and we are using it for disaster recovery as well. We have replication and everything set up with that.

      What is most valuable?

Dell PowerStore is a mid-range product that can suit small companies and provides good IOPS and performance. The relatively small setup we have with Dell PowerStore works well for mid-range customers and some high-end customers as well. If they want to separate workloads accordingly, they can go with it.

We do use Dell PowerStore's data resiliency and cybersecurity features for authentication, and we are using SSO and all those things. Dell PowerStore is quite resilient, and we have not seen any kind of corruption.

      What needs improvement?

Dell PowerStore is expandable up to only three expansion modules. If you want to increase the capacity, we cannot go beyond three enclosures. One is a base enclosure and there are three expansion enclosures. I think Dell PowerStore could add some more expansion enclosures, perhaps seven to eight, to get more capacity.

With CloudIQ, I have seen that when we get access to it, we do not see all the products that we have in CloudIQ. We have to struggle a lot to get access to CloudIQ because it is managed by Dell.

We have not tried using Anytime Upgrade (Lifecycle Extension) from Dell as of now. We are doing an upgrade but not using that Anytime Upgrade, as we have a planned one.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for the last two years in my career overall.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

A firmware upgrade can take around three to four hours, and no downtime is needed. I have seen issues where the node gets crashed and the replacement is needed for hardware. That will be as per the plan and as per the organization policy.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are not clustering multiple Dell PowerStore appliances.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted Dell's customer support or technical support. Earlier the quality of support was excellent, but now it has deteriorated. We do not get quick support, and we have to wait longer to get the support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used alternatives to Dell PowerStore, such as IBM FS 7300 and other solutions.

IBM is a hybrid solution, whereas Dell PowerStore is completely flash-based. Dell PowerStore is more performance-driven, providing more performance.

      How was the initial setup?

Dell PowerStore is pretty easy to install. It comes with a pre-installed operating system itself. You just need to plug it in and plug it into the network, configure IP addresses, and handle a few basic things.

Setup can take approximately three hours minimum for a new client.

      What about the implementation team?

One person in the data center can manage the setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Maintenance for Dell PowerStore includes a maintenance contract with Dell. However, some issues during troubleshooting require reaching out to Dell.

What other advice do I have?

Dell PowerStore management capabilities are pretty easy to use and user-friendly. I would rate this review a 9.

Centralized storage has supported all virtual workloads and has strengthened our disaster recovery
      Pros and Cons
      • "Dell PowerStore improves my organization in general as we are more confident regarding DRP tests and regulations that require us to have a DRP plan."
      • "I have experienced some issues, downtime, and outages with Dell PowerStore, as we have had quite a few issues related to storage and resilience."

What is our primary use case?

My use cases with Dell PowerStore revolve around the fact that all our infrastructure is on Dell PowerStore. Everything related to virtualization infrastructure, including all our applications and VMs, runs on Dell PowerStore.

      What is most valuable?

A feature that I particularly appreciate about Dell PowerStore is RecoverPoint for VM. What makes RecoverPoint for VM special compared to others is that it solves our DRP issues much better. We do not have to purchase another solution, which is very beneficial.

Dell PowerStore improves my organization in general as we are more confident regarding DRP tests and regulations that require us to have a DRP plan. Today we can carry out these tests without any problem and actually meet those requirements.

      What needs improvement?

What I do not prefer as a feature of Dell PowerStore, or what should be improved, is more on the storage side, but not the computing. On the storage side, the management of the deduplication and compression ratio should be enhanced. Artificial intelligence has been implemented, but it is not sufficient yet and is not top tier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for more than fifteen years, approximately twenty years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have experienced some issues, downtime, and outages with Dell PowerStore, as we have had quite a few issues related to storage and resilience. These issues are more related to the configuration of our virtualization infrastructure, especially the ESXi we have today, particularly when we perform updates and upgrades. However, we are supported by Dell, so the outages are limited in duration.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, I can scale and grow easily with this solution. Since we are moving towards AI today, Dell PowerStore can be a major player in transforming the current infrastructure we have.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted Dell support once or twice for issues related to volume on the storage side.

The interaction with Dell support went well. We had some communication challenges initially, but those were resolved.

The issues were resolved in the end, and I would rate customer support as an eight on a scale from one to ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before adopting Dell PowerStore, I considered other solutions such as Equinix and IBM.

      What about the implementation team?

The system deployment experience with Dell PowerStore was that we were supported by another company, Axians, who assisted us. The deployment was smooth and transparent for us, particularly since we were coming from another environment in a migration scenario.

      What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment since adopting Dell PowerStore. We have already reached the return on investment with the current infrastructure, so the ROI is good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My impression of the price and licenses for Dell PowerStore is that we are satisfied. I hope this will not change drastically in the future, but today we are satisfied as it fits within our budget.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I chose Dell PowerStore for the relationship and because they responded to the RFP. They are the ones who meet our needs.

What other advice do I have?

The AI initiative is important for me as artificial intelligence helps optimize workloads and storage, and by extension, helps save money.

I have performance metrics that tell me whether Dell PowerStore is working well, and it performs very well. We are happy.

Dell PowerStore fits my organization's growth fundamentally, providing an infrastructure that supports our expansion. My overall rating for this product is eight out of ten.

Unified storage has simplified administration and has supported seamless growth and maintenance
      Pros and Cons
      • "Dell PowerStore is great in terms of stability and reliability."
      • "There are crashes from time to time. We had a controller problem once where something broke."

What is our primary use case?

As the administrator for Dell PowerStore, I manage its functions and ensure it operates smoothly. Dell PowerStore provides the storage for all the services we have, so every server gets its disks from there. It has a nice interface and is easy to manage.

      What is most valuable?

The upgrade runs quite well, except that when it shuts down one head, it then says you cannot get in here. You just have to know that you have to log in via the other head, otherwise you stand there for three quarters of an hour wondering if it is still there or if it is coming back. Dell PowerStore is fast storage and easy to administer. I would like to be able to do more on the CLI, but I have other systems where you can do that.

What differentiates Dell PowerStore from other storage solutions is that it has become simpler and more autonomous over time. Earlier, you would say you need a RAID group with a certain number of disks in a specific RAID configuration. Today you say you need a LUN size of a certain amount, and the system does everything in the background, which makes it much easier.

      What needs improvement?

Where Dell in general could be more open is an area where Dell PowerStore could be improved. I have competition in-house where you can only work on the CLI if you really want to do it well, and that is more fun as an admin. However, the nice thing about the simple interface is that you can also hand it to someone who is not deeply involved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell PowerStore for six and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Dell PowerStore is great in terms of stability and reliability. Even if something fails, it is really quick to swap it out. If you have virtualization layers on top, such as VPLEX, you can work on the other side and maintain the machine in peace. There are crashes from time to time. We had a controller problem once where something broke. A DIMM was defective, so the controller had to be shut down and removed, but the other controller kept running. If you do that at a time when there is not much load, then it is fine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling in terms of disks is always possible. Dell PowerStore grows well with company needs because you can cluster them so that you can put them together under one interface. You can just put a second one next to the first one, link it to the other one, and then it is basically a single system to administer.

How are customer service and support?

It depends on the topic you submit regarding Dell support. I have not had any problems with Dell PowerStore, but there are other products where it sometimes gets stuck, though that is not Dell PowerStore support's fault. On a scale of one to ten for support, I would give it a nine. That is typically German; we do not give a ten, so the Americans will have to live with that.

How would you rate customer service and support?

      Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with VNX, Unity, and XtremIO, so the whole EMC range. Before deciding on Dell PowerStore, I should note that the previous company had Dell PowerStore. They also had other solutions including XtremIO and Unity, and as Unity evolved, Dell PowerStore came along. Because people were satisfied with those products and I was very familiar with them, we decided to stick with it. At my current company, they also looked at other things, and at the company where I was before that, they also looked at various solutions. However, it is often the case that Dell, or rather the former EMC products, is what people knew and had been happy with for years. Honestly, people are usually too comfortable to switch to a completely different vendor when they do not know what they are buying there.

      How was the initial setup?

I took part in installing and configuring Dell PowerStore, including cabling, configuring, bringing it up for the first time, and doing upgrades. I took part in everything I could, and it actually runs quite well.

What other advice do I have?

We do not yet know how Dell PowerStore plays a role in our company's AI initiatives. We had a meeting about a month ago with our sales representative, Dominik Nitsche, who is responsible for us. He was there with his colleagues, and they presented the HCI model again, where you can choose which hypervisor runs on it, and Dell PowerStore would be underneath. In case we decide we would like to try that out, Dell PowerStore would be in play with us again. I do not have much involvement with Dell PowerStore's pricing and licensing because I am just the admin and not the one who has to buy it. I give this review an overall rating of ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

      On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
