What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It could be more scalable. We have some issues mostly from the scalability standpoint because we need to do some specific customizations to what we need in terms of features.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is okay with the company that we use for support.
What other advice do I have?
I probably won't recommend this version to new users because we need to do a lot of customizations.
On a scale from one to ten, I would give Microsoft Dynamics AX a seven.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

AVP-Head,MIS Department at a manufacturing company with 5,001-10,000 employees
The most valuable feature is the manufacturing module.
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature for us is the manufacturing module. It addresses our product costing for tuna canning."
- "The database requires a huge CPU and memory resources."
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature for us is the manufacturing module. It addresses our product costing for tuna canning.
How has it helped my organization?
It keeps product costing close to the actual cost of production. It also gives us better handling of the approval process (workflow system).
What needs improvement?
The database requires a huge CPU and memory resources.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using the solution since 2014.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We encountered an issue with stability. There was a problem on the workflow, which required escalation to Microsoft for resolution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We encountered an issue with scalability. Hardware requirements are quite large compared with other ERP solutions.
How are customer service and technical support?
I would give technical support a rating of 7/10.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
The previous ERP solution did not have a good local technical support facility. Escalation to the product proprietor was even worse.
How was the initial setup?
Like any other ERP system, the initial setup is straightforward:
- Business requirement analysis
- Business/office procedures
- Gathering of forms and reports
- System mapping
- Customization
- Testing
- Go-live
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
- Go for cloud implementation, if cost is critical.
- Know the solution provider's fiscal period, as you can get a better discount if the contract signing is near the end of the fiscal period.
- Identify your end-user role, as the license is based on user role/access.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated SAP and Oracle.
What other advice do I have?
Look for a solution that has multiple partners in your area (i.e., country). The system integrator should present a similar successful project implementation for reference.
Negotiate for implementation contingency (man-days). All business processes and procedures should be documented to ensure no surprises during and after implementation.
Handling change management is critical to the success of the project.

Chief Executive Officer at Easy Touch
Flexible, easy to use, and well-covers business needs
Pros and Cons
- "It is stable, suitable for businesses, and covers all business needs."
- "There is no Arabic interface in Microsoft Business Central, which is a big weak point."
What is our primary use case?
We are a solution provider and Dynamix AX is one of the products that we implement for our clients. It is primarily used for the Industrial Field in Egypt, although we have implemented solutions for doctors and trading companies, like Pingu for kids' games and toys.
We also focus on trading and investors, especially in the food industry.
What is most valuable?
Microsoft Dynamics is a great product. All Dynamic products are great.
It is stable, suitable for businesses, and covers all business needs.
It's very flexible and easy to use.
What needs improvement?
There is no Arabic interface in Microsoft Business Central, which is a big weak point. There is, however, an Arabic interface for Dynamics AX, but not Dynamics AX Business center. This is an area that needs to be focused on.
In the next release, I would like to see an Indian-Arabic interface.
Taxation may need some enhancements for vendors. They need a discount scheme for selling.
Also, they need more features.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Microsoft Dynamics AX since 2007.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Microsoft Dynamics is scalable. Most of our clients are medium-sized businesses but some are enterprise companies.
How are customer service and technical support?
We follow Sure Step Methodology and provide the Sure Step documents for our customers.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing for Dynamics is costly and needs to be improved. To boost the users to purchase a minimum license to end-users on the Cloud is expensive.
It is $180 to $200 per user per month with a minimum of 20 users, which makes selling the product a bit difficult.
The Business Central price is quite suitable. It is $70.00 per user per month and $100 per month as a package, which is better.
What other advice do I have?
My advice is to focus on the size of the business when it comes to creating a solution.
For example, if it's a medium-sized company, don't offer Business Central. Instead, offer them AX for finance and operations. Or, or if they are not medium don't sell them finance and operations, sell them the Business Center it would be a better choice.
Give the user what they need.
I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

It's a great toolkit to drive efficiencies throughout your entire organization
Pros and Cons
- "AX is nearly a Tier One product, so implementations are long, but there's a lot of flexibility. Also, the ability to handle different issues found in larger organizations."
- "AX does take some time and maintenance."
Microsoft Dynamics AX is very strong in the manufacturing sector, as well as other verticals. It scales well and we've found several clients who were looking at Oracle, SAP, JD Edwards and so on who were well served at a very competitive price point (usually much less). One client was looking at a $5M SAP proposal and we got AX in just under $2M, and they were very happy with it as they have several sister companies that face $500K SAP upgrades/maintenance seemingly annually.
AX is nearly a Tier One product, so implementations are long, but there's a lot of flexibility. Also, the ability to handle different issues found in larger organizations.
There are several other MS Dynamics products for smaller companies. Our AX users were in the $200M to $400M annual revenue range. AX partners and resellers are a critical step. We found using a partner who specializes in their vertical is critical. We've also done a couple of AX rescues of clients that went with super-large practices where the consulting talent varies in skill. We tend to stick with boutique firms whose consultants we know and trust.
The cons: It's not really a con, but AX does take some time and maintenance. What you would expect with any large ERP product, it's not just a 'slam it in and you are done' project, but the type of technology you'd select if you were planning on continuous improvements and tying varying technologies together.
We had a combo contract manufacturing pharma outfit and it had some really good success in phase two of importing daily production reports from contract manufacturers that provided better visibility to finished goods, WIP, and raw materials inventory onsite at the contract manufacturers.
For a regional medical practice, we were able to link SQL tables from the practice management software to track data, such as 'which clinics were the docs practicing at on a certain day' without them having to do any actual data entry beyond what they were already documenting in patient records. This was nice.
If you're planning a major project upgrade and can take the time to put together a cost/revenue model showing AX breakeven, we generally project a break-even at less than 18 months. It's a great toolkit to drive efficiencies throughout the entire organization. If you're just looking to replace an outgrown ERP, it's probably a little big or you need a more advanced IT approach to really appreciate what you can do with AX.
There are also some good user groups and a growing development community. We understand the new Dynamics 365 Enterprise is using the AX code base and look forward to seeing that version mature in the months/years to come.
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: We are a software selection and implementation firm - not affiliated with any software or ERP platform but have had several clients successfully implement AX in pharma manufacturing, healthcare regional practice, food & bev manufacturing and others.
