Comparable with other products, good screen share, and good functionality
    Pros and Cons
    • "Screen share is the most valuable feature."
    • "An opportunity they could benefit from would be a version that includes meeting transcription. I usually use a third-party product to do transcription."

    What is most valuable?

Screen share is the most valuable feature.

    What needs improvement?

An opportunity they could benefit from would be a version that includes meeting transcription. I usually use a third-party product to do transcription.

In terms of Screen share, it would be helpful to have more control over what is being presented on the screen. They may have that functionality, but I've never used it. For example, being able to click back to look at previous slides, even though the presenter has gone forward, or having some type of pointer mechanism that helps to call out different areas of the screen when presenting.

They may already have a function for this that I am not aware of, but I would like to see more whiteboarding capabilities. I would think of this in terms of post-it notes or other things where you can facilitate some interactive engagement. There are products like Miro and CloudBoard, as well as a slew of others of a similar nature. I believe Microsoft Teams has something similar built-in. But, given how much time people spend in online meetings, I believe there should be ways to engage or create more engagement with the participants.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Webex for approximately six months.

We use the most current Windows-based version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, it is pretty reliable. Webex is fairly stable.

How are customer service and support?

I have not had to use technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am also using Zoom. I use Zoom more frequently than I have used Webex.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have been doing some research on Robotic Process Automation, Automation Anywhere, and UiPath.

What other advice do I have?

I would suggest going through some type of tutorial. There's functionality under the hood that isn't always obvious, or necessarily easy to find. I have run into this type of problem before, such as how to flip the switch so that when you start a meeting, you're not automatically muted, and so on. You have to understand your configuration settings so that you don't waste time on silly challenges, particularly when you're in the middle of a meeting.

I would rate Webex a nine out of ten. I think it's comparable to other products on the market. I have a preference for Zoom just because I am more familiar with it and its capabilities. But apart from that, I think it's a decent product.

    What is most valuable?

Integrates well with other Cisco solutions.

How are customer service and support?

I have not needed to use support because when there is an issue they fix it fast and sometimes you do not notice there was a problem.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Microsoft Teams and Skype for business. We used them for instant messaging and for sharing documents.

What other advice do I have?

Webex is a good product. I think it's nice when you have other Cisco products onboarded. It gives you the full configurations that you want. If you are using a Cisco telephone system and you using WebEx, it's the same thing. You can jump in from one end to the other. It is useful.

    WebEx Reporting Insanity

I just finished one month of repeated emails, phone calls, and online test sessions with Cisco WebEx tech support. We found the answer to the problem I originally reported to them and in an attempt to save others the same frustration I thought I would write it up in this post.

The symptom I observed was that the In-Event Activity Report for one of my WebEx Event Center webinars contained columns showing results for some of the polls we had run, but others were missing.

It turns out that this was because WEBEX ONLY CAPTURES IN-EVENT ACTIVITY INFORMATION WHILE THE RECORDER IS RUNNING.

My first two polls were just audience demographics, asked while giving the live audience their instructions about using the conferencing software. I don't record that, because viewers of the archive have no reason to care and they can't participate. I start the recording after giving instructions and before introducing the content. Turns out this is a very bad idea if you want a report.

If you look hard enough, you can find a WebEx Knowledge Base Article (WBX45170) that tells you "In-Event Activity Reports are only available for events recorded on the server (Network-Based Recording)." But it never mentions the fact that information is only captured while the recorder is on.

I can't think of any way to describe this other than product design insanity. Reports are vital records of what happened during a web session. They should be… must be… divorced from any decisions I make about whether I want to make an archive recording, what portions of the event I elect to record, and whether I store the recording on disk or the network server.

The In-Event Activity Report is very important in WebEx, because it offers the only combined, integrated record of attendee interactions. The only other way to see their chat messages, Q&A questions, or poll responses is to manually save multiple distinct files before you close your meeting session. And all three of those interaction reports are in significantly different formats. Hell, they don't even go to the same default directory on your hard drive.

I expect more from the market share leader in the world of web events. WebEx has a massive customer base, a long product history, and plenty of real world usage experience. We should not have to put up with substandard reporting of our critical event data.
